Problem:
GE top-load or front-load washer has flashing lights, does not respond to button presses, and won’t start a cycle.
Possible Causes:
-
Control board glitch or software freeze
-
Control lock (Child Lock) enabled
-
Power supply issue or improper grounding
-
Faulty lid lock or door lock switch
-
Failed user interface (UI) board or main control board
-
Moisture or corrosion on control connectors
Tools Required:
-
Screwdriver
-
Multimeter
-
Flashlight
-
Towel (if water is present)
Step-by-Step Procedure:
1. Perform a Hard Reset
-
Unplug washer from power for 2–5 minutes.
-
Press and hold Start/Pause button for 5 seconds before plugging back in.
-
Plug back in and check if lights return to normal.
2. Check for Control Lock (Child Lock)
-
Look for a padlock icon or “CL” on the display.
-
On many GE models, press and hold “Steam”, “Lock”, or “Delay Start” button for 3–5 seconds to toggle control lock.
-
If locked, all buttons will be unresponsive.
3. Verify Power Supply
-
Confirm outlet is providing 120V using a multimeter.
-
Check plug and cord for damage.
-
Avoid using extension cords.
-
Confirm proper ground – washers need correct polarity and grounding to function.
4. Run Service Mode / Error Code Check
-
For top-load GE models with rotary dial:
-
Unplug washer.
-
Plug back in.
-
Within 30 seconds, rotate knob as follows:
Left → Right → Right → Right → Left → Right -
LED display will flash diagnostic codes.
-
-
For front-load models with buttons:
Refer to service manual – typically involves pressing Start + Delay or Power + Start for 3–5 seconds.
5. Inspect Lid or Door Lock
-
A faulty lock can cause lights to blink and prevent operation.
-
Open top panel or front panel.
-
Inspect wires and lock mechanism.
-
Test with multimeter (should show continuity when locked).
-
Replace if damaged or intermittently working.
6. Check Control Board Connections
-
Disconnect power.
-
Open top/back panel to access main control board and UI board.
-
Reseat all connectors (unplug and plug back in).
-
Look for:
-
Burn marks
-
Corrosion or moisture
-
Loose or broken wires
-
7. Replace Parts If Needed
-
User Interface Board – if buttons don’t respond but board has power
-
Main Control Board – if UI is fine but washer behaves erratically
-
Lid Lock Assembly – if lock signal fails during startup
Notes:
-
Flashing lights with no response usually indicate communication loss or lock-related failure.
-
Always unplug machine before removing covers.
-
If under warranty, contact GE support for authorized service.
