Problem:
Whirlpool VMW (Vertical Modular Washer) immediately starts draining when powered on or when a cycle is selected, without filling with water or agitating.
Possible Causes:
-
Pressure switch hose disconnected or leaking
-
Faulty pressure switch
-
Stuck or shorted drain pump relay on control board
-
Faulty main control board (MCU)
-
Washer thinks it’s in flood condition (false full tub signal)
-
Software or calibration error
Tools Required:
-
Screwdriver
-
Multimeter
-
Flashlight
-
Clear hose for testing (optional)
Step-by-Step Procedure:
1. Unplug Washer
-
Always disconnect power before disassembly or testing.
2. Access Pressure Hose
-
Tilt washer back or remove rear panel to locate the small rubber hose from the tub to the pressure switch.
-
Inspect the hose for:
-
Disconnection
-
Cracks or pinholes
-
Blockages (blow through to test)
-
3. Inspect Pressure Switch
-
Usually located near the control board at the top rear.
-
Ensure hose is securely attached.
-
If in doubt, replace the switch or test with a multimeter (check for switching when pressure is applied).
4. Check for Stuck Drain Pump Relay
-
If the drain pump runs constantly even when unplugged and plugged back in, the relay on the control board may be stuck closed.
-
No easy field repair – replace main control board if relay is faulty.
5. Run Diagnostic Mode
-
Turn dial to “off” position.
-
Rotate the knob as follows: right → right → right → left → right → (should enter diagnostics).
-
LEDs will blink – continue to auto test or manual test mode.
-
Observe whether washer recognizes proper water level.
6. Calibrate Washer (if needed)
-
In diagnostic mode, run calibration cycle (C0).
-
This recalibrates pressure readings and may fix false readings.
7. Test Drain Pump
-
Run manual test for pump.
-
Listen for normal sound (not loud or buzzing).
-
If pump runs continuously or is noisy, test with multimeter or inspect for debris.
Normal Operation Notes:
-
If the control board detects full tub when it shouldn’t, it enters drain mode to prevent flooding.
-
A damaged or loose pressure hose is the most common reason.
Replace If Necessary:
-
Pressure hose: if cracked, kinked, or detached
-
Pressure switch: if not switching properly
-
Main control board: if drain relay is stuck
-
Drain pump: if stuck on or internally shorted
